The Max Desfor Photographs and Papers contain photographs taken by Max Desfor while he was employed with the Associated Press from 1940 to 1968. There are also newspaper clippings, personal correspondence, business correspondence and other files dating from 1942 to 2008 as well as numerous photographs and negatives dating from 1936 to 2008. Also included in the collection are many photographs and negatives dated from 1936 to 2008 documenting Desfor's experiences in Korea, Japan, India and many other places, foreign and domestic. Some are photographs Desfor took for AP jobs while others are personal. The collection also contains Desfor's Pulitzer Prize-winning war photo, "Flight of Refugees Across Wrecked Bridge in Korea," taken in 1950, of Korean refugees fleeing along the twisted girders of a bombed bridge. The collection also contains videocassettes and CDs ranging in dates from 1985 to 2008, although most of them are undated, as well as slides from 1969 and 1972. Max Desfor was born in New York City on November 8, 1913. He studied at Brooklyn College in New York. He started his career at the Associated Press in 1933 as a darkroom assistant. In 1938, Desfor became staff photographer at the Associated Press bureau in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1939 he joined the Associated Press staff in Washington, D.C. In 1942 he was promoted to photo editor and in 1944 he was promoted to war correspondent and assigned to photograph Admiral Nimitz's command in the Pacific Ocean area. Less

The James Fitzgibbon Papers includes architect and North Carolina State University School of Design professor James Fitzgibbon’s architectural drawings for the Ralph Fadum House of Raleigh, North Carolina, the George W. The collection includes color spot sketches of the exterior; site plans; working drawings; floor plans; shop drawings and blueprints and two undated drawings (1 sketch of interior elevation and 1 floor plan of 617 Kirby Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.); photographs by Joseph Molitor of the Fadum House; two models of the Globe Playhouse; photographs of study models and articles. James Walter Fitzgibbon (1915-1985) helped found the School of Design at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1948. Fitzgibbon was hired as the associate architect for campus planning during the School of Design’s inception. He also served as a professor of architecture at North Carolina State College from 1948 to 1953. Fitzgibbon later served as president of Synergetics Inc., an association of Raleigh architects and engineers, before taking a position with Washington University in St. Louis. The Matthew Nowicki Drawings and Other Material contain architectural drawings and sketches, but it also includes his writings as well as biographical sketches written about Nowicki. Writings by Nowicki include a speech and several articles on architectural design. Documents written about Nowicki include newspaper and magazine articles, mostly composed after his death, and several biographical compilations of Nowicki's work. Along with Nowicki's drawings and sketches for the North Carolina State Fairgrounds and Dorton Arena, there are preliminary drawings that were done for Mayer and Whittlesey in 1950, drawings for the city of Chandigarh in Punjab, India, and a three-dimensional model of Dorton Arena. Dimensions vary with each drawing and sketch. The smallest are approximately 18 x 26 inches, the largest approximately 26 x 30 inches. Matthew Nowicki (1910-1950), born Maciej Nowicki, was a professor of Architecture and served as the acting Head of the Department of Architecture at North Carolina State College (1948-1950). He studied at the Chicago Art Institute (1922), the School of Design of Gerson-Warsaw (1925-1926), the School of Mehofer-Cracow (1927), and the Polytechnic of Warsaw (1925-1926). Nowicki was born in Chita, Russia and later married artist Stanislawa Sandeck. He designed the interiors of the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh and was a design consultant to William H. Deitrick for Dorton Arena. He also consulted on a State Archives and Museum building (unbuilt) and was a member of the design team for the headquarters of the United Nations. He died in a plane crash over Egypt in 1950 while flying back to the United States from India. Less

The Phil Freelon Papers consists of architectural drawings, extensive project files, and related architectural records. The projects documented include: Hillside High School; Diamond View Office Building; Durham Bulls Athletic Park; Durham Police Department; Durham Solid Waste Facility; Hope Valley Elementary; and The Hill Center in Durham, N.C.; and Lake Johnson Boat House and the North Carolina Old Revenue Building in Raleigh, N.C. Also included in the collection are some items from Freelon's personal archive documenting his career in architecture. Most of the records in the collection relate to Freelon's earlier projects in his career (during the 1990s). The collection also contains five architectural models and selected photographs of Freelon's work. Phil Freelon (1953-2019), was an African American architect who was founder and president of The Freelon Group, Inc., and then managing director and director of design of Perkins + Will, located in Durham, North Carolina. Freelon specialized in public architecture and was best known for his design of cultural museums and educational buildings in Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois; San Francisco, California; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Atlanta and Augusta, Georgia; and Durham, Greensboro and Charlotte, North Carolina. Freelon led the design team that gave shape to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, won the 2012 Design Guild Award, and the same year was appointed to the United States Commission of Fine Arts by President Obama. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Horticultural Science contain newsletters, budget information, academic and administrative reports, departmental publications, memoranda, information regarding departmental programs and events, slides, photographs, lantern slides, and glass plate negatives. Also included are publications produced with the North Carolina Commercial Flower Growers' Association. Materials range in date from the 1900s to 1990s.This collection also includes a large amount of photographic materials including Kodachrome slides, lantern slides, photographs, and negatives. Much of this material is undated. The Kodachrome slides appear to be from the 1940s to the 1970s. The lantern slides and glass plate negatives date to the early twentieth century and depict the planting, harvesting, sorting, packaging, and selling of crops. The lantern slides were hand colored by Effie Brown Earll Slingerland, an artist and advocate for women's suffrage. With the founding of NC State College in 1889, five academic divisions were created, one of which was the department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany. Following the general reorganization of the School of Agriculture in 1923, the horticultural extension work performed outside the department became fully integrated with the academic and research activities of the department. Today, the Department of Horticultural Science occupies Kilgore Hall (constructed in 1952), employs over fifty faculty, and continues to play an important role in state-wide horticultural research and extension. Clippings from various newspapers and professional publications relate to lives and works of deans, faculty, and alumni of the School of Design. The majority of newspapers are local, including the News and Observer and the Raleigh Times, but national papers, such as the New York Times, are also included. Other clippings relate broadly to the Harrye B. Lyons Library, School of Design, and North Carolina State University including associated students and staff. Acquisition information, annual reports, project reports, policies, meetings notes, and reference files of the Harrye B. Lyons Library are included. Brochures, fliers, and memoranda relating to the students, staff, faculty, and events of the School of Design are also included. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University, College of Design, orginally School of Design, and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. The Design Library is located in Brooks Hall, now part of the College of Design. Brooks Hall was originally built to be the library on campus, D. H. Hill Jr. Library. In the early 1950s, NC State alumnusThomas Thurmon “Tommy” Hayes, Jr., and Calvin Howell formed the architectural firm Hayes-Howell Architects based in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The firm played a significant role in constructing the built environment of Southern Pines and surrounding areas,while designing and building residential and commercial buildings throughout North Carolina. The collection contains drawings for notable buildings in North Carolina, such as the North Carolina State Hospital and United Telephone Company of the Carolina offices. The MacMillan and MacMillan Architectural Papers, 1919, 1950-2010, document the professional activities of Dan and Frank MacMillan and their architectural firm. The collection consists of architectural drawings with various iterations of designs, blueprints, construction documents, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and related materials. MacMillan and MacMillan’s projects include mostly private residences, with a small number of subdivision developments. Also included in the collection are drawings of landscape architecture projects by Richard C. Bell, done in collaboration with MacMillan and MacMillan projects. There is also a series of photographs from the period (1950-1952) in which the Dorton Arena was under construction; Dan MacMillan worked on the Dorton Arena as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction. Dan (1921- ) and Frank (d. 1991) MacMillan were born in Fayetteville, North Carolina and were principals in the MacMillan and MacMillan architectural firm. Dan MacMillan graduated from North Carolina State University in 1948 and worked for several years with the architect Jim Webb and then as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction on Raleigh’s Dorton Arena. In 1952 Dan MacMillan founded his firm, Dan MacMillan Architect and Associates in Fayetteville. After his brother, Frank, received his architecture license in the early 1950s Dan partnered with him and the firm was renamed MacMillan and MacMillan. Frank MacMillan died in 1991. The MacMillans had also partnered with other architects during their career, including Brian Shawcroft. Less

The College of Natural Resources photographs include portraits and candid shots of students and faculty in classes, labs, and outdoor settings. Prominent faculty members pictured include Carl Alwin Schenck, Richard J. Preston, and Clarence E. Libby. Photographs of meetings, conferences, events, and awards receptions are included. This collection also contains images of the buildings, laboratories, and equipment associated with the College of Natural Resources. Although the majority of the photographs are undated, these photographs range approximately from the late 1930s to the late 1990s; most are from the 1950s to the 1970s. The majority of these photographs are black and white. In 1929, North Carolina State College formally established the Department of Forestry. In 1931, the Department of Forestry was renamed the Division of Forestry, and in 1950, the Division of Forestry was elevated to School status and renamed the School of Forestry. The School of Forestry became the School of Forest Resources in 1968, and the College of Forest Resources in 1987. Finally, in 2000, the College of Forest Resources assumed its present name, the College of Natural Resources. As of 2010, the College of Natural Resources includes the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and the Department of Wood and Paper Science. The North Carolina State Beekeepers Association Records, 1917-2021 (bulk 1950-2018), contains minutes, agendas, financial reports, correspondence, newsletters, publications, beekeepings manuals, curriculum materials, calendars, and archived web content. Other materials include photographs, videos, and presentation materials relating to beekeeping and honey production. Significant portions of the collection are from the personal and professional papers of John D. Foust, who was elected President of the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association in 2003. Materials range from 1917 to 2021, with the bulk of materials from 1950 to 2018. Formed in 1917, the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association (NCSBA) has grown into the largest state beekeeping association in the United States, with more than 70 of the state’s counties organized into local chapters within the organization. As of 2017, the NCSBA is a volunteer led organization with more than 4,000 active members, most of whom are hobbyist beekeepers. Members of the NCSBA promote the honey bee to the public at beekeeping schools, county fairs, festivals, and special events, including Bug Fest in Raleigh, Bee Friendly Day in Tarboro, and National Honey Bee Day in Goldsboro. The Jerome Kohl Papers contains paper records, photographs, and video tapes from 1942 to 1995 that detail Kohl's long career in the evolving fields of nuclear energy and technology transfer. Reference and lecture materials show the intellectual milieu in which Kohl was immersed. His publications demonstrate the way he synthesized that information and his own research into the kinds of ideas that engineering and science education journals found publishable. Documents relating to the contracts and consultancy work he undertook reflect both his and the nuclear industry's research interests, as well as the manner in which a scientist went about obtaining money and support from the 1950s to the early 1990s. The collection also sheds light on the peacetime uses of nuclear power in general, as well as the people and state and federal agencies involved in its forward movement and regulation. In addition, it shows the development of North Carolina State University's Nuclear Engineering department and its extension program.
